Facts about your lips you probably didn’t know
Your lips have no sweat glands, burn more easily than the rest of your face and are as unique as your fingerprint. Wild, right? Here are the lip facts nobody taught you in school.
If your lips get chapped while the rest of your face is totally fine…
If you’ve never once thought about what your lips are actually made of…
Then class is in session. Here’s everything you never knew about your lips, and why it matters.
Lesson one: the red part of your lips has a name. It’s called the vermilion, and it’s where the skin of your face meets the inside of your mouth.
It’s super thin, just a few cell layers thick. That’s actually why lips look red: there’s so little covering them that the blood vessels underneath show through.
Thin, exposed and working all day long. No wonder they need a little extra love.
Fact one: your lips can’t look after themselves
No sweat glands. Almost no oil glands. Your lips can’t make the protective film the rest of your skin relies on.
They also lose moisture faster than most of your face, which is why they’re the first to feel it on a plane or in winter.
And licking them? Makes it worse. Saliva evaporates fast and contains enzymes that can irritate skin. Sorry.
Fact two: your lips are super sensitive
Lips are packed with nerve endings, making them one of the most sensitive parts of your body. That’s why a tiny crack feels like a big deal.
They also have very little melanin, the pigment that helps protect skin from the sun. So they can burn even when the rest of your face doesn’t.
Thin, sensitive and barely sun-protected. Your lips deserve way more attention than they get.
Cute on the outside. Seriously good on the inside. Exactly what your lips deserve.
Your lip print is one of a kind. It’s unique enough that forensic scientists study it. The fancy name? Cheiloscopy.
Humans are one of the only primates with lips that turn outward. That’s why you can see the red part. Most other primates keep it tucked in.
Some medications are known for drying out lips, especially certain acne treatments. If your lips suddenly feel extra dry, it might not be the weather.
