BUYER’S GUIDE
The lip balm market is full of copycats. Here’s how to spot the original.
When a beauty product takes off, look-alikes follow fast, and lip balm in small, cute jars is no exception. Here’s how to tell the original apart from the products that copy its look, and why the details matter.
If you’ve seen two jars online that look almost identical and wondered which one was the real thing…
If you’ve ever bought the cheaper version of something and regretted it…
Then here’s a simple guide to spotting the original, with a direct comparison.
Copycat products are common in beauty. Once a design gets popular, other brands produce something with a similar shape, similar colors and a similar name, often at a lower price.
Looking alike is easy. Matching what’s inside, how it’s made and how it’s backed is much harder. That’s where most of the difference lives.
One of the most copied designs right now is the small, rounded lip balm jar with a built-in applicator, made popular by Honeybalm.
Look-alikes copy the outside, not the inside
From a distance, Bee Balm (mybeebalmco.com) and Honeybalm can look similar: small jars, bright colors, bee-themed branding. Up close, the differences show.
Honeybalm is built around three hero ingredients, beeswax, propolis and vitamin E, with a Honeyspoon applicator built into every lid. Bee Balm describes its formula as honey-based, made with propolis and real honey.
That’s not a small difference. The ingredients decide how a balm feels, how it wears and how comfortable it is to use all day.
How to spot the original
Check the claims. A cosmetic lip balm can help lips feel softer and more comfortable. Be cautious of any balm that promises to “heal” your lips. That’s a medical claim, and Honeybalm deliberately doesn’t make it.
Check the policies. Honeybalm offers free returns for 30 days and free shipping from $28. Bee Balm lists 14-day returns and a higher free-shipping threshold on its website.
Similar on the outside. Different ingredients, different standards and a different promise on the inside.
Anyone can copy a jar. It’s much harder to copy what’s in it.
